20.09.2017 - 18.02.2018

The city of Basel celebrates the breadth and diversity of Swiss performance art from 1960 to the present through an exceptional institutional collaboration between the Museum Tinguely, Kaserne Basel, and Kunsthalle Basel in partnership with the Centre culturel suisse in Paris. Together these institutions illuminate performative practices in Switzerland-looking back, for instance, to when Jean Tinguely blew up the Basel Carnival Committee in a performative action in 1974, and looking forward, with new performances by established and emerging artists.

Spanning five months, from 19 September 2017 to 19 February 2018, this project has roots in a multidisciplinary exhibition and festival held in 2015 at the Centre culturel suisse in Paris, the goal of which was to research, promote, and present emerging performative practices in Switzerland. Building upon and expanding that effort, the Basel institutions join forces to examine this powerful medium, each from a distinct perspective.

60 Years of Performance Art in Switzerland
The Museum Tinguely offers an approach to Swiss performance art during the last sixty years, revealing that the term actually encompasses many different visual and performative modes, developed in dialogue with artists around the world. The comprehensive exhibition tells this story through documents and artworks, accompanied by an extensive program of historical and new live performances.

Performing Choreographies
For a week in September, Kaserne Basel showcases artistic works that blur the line between performance and choreography. In productions by Foofwa d'Imobilité, Dimitri de Perrot, Simone Aughterlony, and La Ribot, bodies move in a spectrum of modalities, from showcased objectuality to organized choreography in time and space. Occasionally skirting the edge of the visible, the audible, and the perceptible, the performances develop new relations with the viewer, and devise new rules for the performative.

New Swiss Performance Now
Framed by two of Basel's liveliest cultural events, Museum Night in January 2018 and the kickoff of the city's carnival celebrations on the night between February 18 and 19, 2018 (the Morgestraich), Kunsthalle Basel devotes itself to contemporary Swiss performance art for a full month. Emerging Swiss artists present newly commissioned and recent pieces in an extensive program that unfolds in the venue's grand, skylit upper floor and spectacularly ends with the city's own collective performance: carnival.
