About the institution

The Museum der Kulturen is the largest ethnological museum in Switzerland and holds one the most significant collections in Europe on life in European and non-European cultures. The museum presents its exhibits in a way that invites viewers to self-reflection in an encounter with the Other and otherness. Thus it offers new views and insights, inspiration, and food for thought.

Basel Carnival. Colours, masks, sounds (Visits only on request)

Vocatively displayed in authentic historic rooms, this exhibition presents a cross-section of Basel Fasnacht (carnival): figures, masks, ancient documents and a "Fasnachtbeiz" (carnival restaurant) recreate the colourful irreverent atmosphere that pervades an urban society.
